I never really thought about outsiders and otherness before this College Lit class. One thing I'm noticing is that everyone seems to be an outsider in some way. There is a kind of otherness to everything. It doesn't matter who somebody is; he or she is most likely considered an outsider, or different, to somebody else. I don't think that it is a bad thing. I think it opens our eyes. It shows us what makes people the way they are today. It kind of makes everyone their own person.
It's kind of weird to think about how one person might consider one thing normal, and another might consider it completely off the charts. That almost allows for us to learn even more. If we all thought and felt the same way about everything, this world would be so boring. So, I guess in that sense, otherness is really important.
I completely agree with you. Normal is not the same for any one person. We all lead completely different lives from one another, at least in some aspects. So normal doesn't just vary from culture to culture or something bigger. It varies on a much smaller scale from person to person. You're right. The world would be a boring place if this weren't the case, and everyone needs to recognize this.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well with your normal concept. In sociology we watched a video about how cultures have different norms. In one video, there was an african tribe and if you didn't have those rings around your neck to make it longer you weren't normal. If someone here in the United States had that they would definitely be considered an outsider.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you. Otherness is important because it makes the world more interesting. Like Aly said, different cultures view things differently so people in other countries would consider different things to be weird than we do in America.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Everyone has a different idea of what is normal so there will always be otherness. It can differ from just within a family or bigger things like culture or religion. I really like how everyone is different. If everyone were the same this world would be really, really, boring!
ReplyDeleteTrue that girl!!! No two people can be alike, or else the world would be too boring. And excellent point on lack of progress if everyone was the same, that is a great perspective.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. No two people are alike. In the book Illusions, it pointed out this fact, that no one lives in the same world that you live in. Its kind of a weird thing to think about. If we are all outsiders, why cant we just accept people for their differences, knowing that we have them too? I don't know, maybe I'm just not that confident in the morality of the human race. I wish there was peace and everyone could be happy, but people stand in their own way of happiness by creating obstacles that people must tackle throughout life. I guess I have been through my share of rejection, and wish that the world was a nicer place where everyone would be accepted. Cause lets be honest, the world is a very big place to stand alone in.
